Description:   A vulnerability was reported in Microsoft Core XML Services. A remote user can cause arbitrary code to be executed on the target user's system.

A remote user can create specially crafted HTML that, when loaded by the target user, will trigger a memory corruption error and execute arbitrary code on the target system. The code will run with the privileges of the target user.

Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 is affected. Microsoft Expression Web is affected. Microsoft Word Viewer 2003 is affected.

The vendor was notified on May 17, 2006.

Zero Day Initiative and iDefense separately reported this vulnerability.

Impact:   A remote user can create HTML that, when loaded by the target user, will execute arbitrary code on the target user's system.
Solution:   The vendor has issued fixes for XML Core Services 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, and 6.0. A patch matrix is provided in the Microsoft advisory.

A restart may be required.

On September 27, 2007, Microsoft updated their advisory to warn of a potential reliability issue when Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 is installed on Windows Vista. A fix is available in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 941833.

On June 24, 2008, Microsoft updated their advisory to indicate that Windows Server 2008 is also affected, as is the SP3 version of XP and SP1 version of Vista. No changes have been made to the patch binaries.
