Windows Input Validation Flaw in Win32 API Lets Remote and Local Users Execute Arbitrary Code
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1018230
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1018230
CVE Reference:   CVE-2007-2219   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Jun 12 2007
Impact:   Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 2000 SP4, 2003 SP2, XP SP2; and prior service packs
Description:   A vulnerability was reported in the Windows Win32 API. A remote user can cause arbitrary code to be executed on the target user's system.

The Win32 API does not properly validate user-supplied parameters passed via a function call.

A local user can create a specially crafted application to execute arbitrary code.

Because some web-enabled applications (e.g., Internet Explorer) use the Win32 API function when parsing certain web pages, this flaw can be exploited by remote users. A remote user can create specially crafted HTML that, when loaded by the target user, will execute arbitrary code on the target system.

Microsoft credits Billy Rios from VeriSign with reporting this vulnerability.

Impact:   A remote user can create HTML that, when loaded by the target user, will execute arbitrary code on the target user's system.
