GOOP Gallery Input Validation Flaw in 'image' Parameter Permits Cross-Site Scripting Attacks
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1017081
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1017081
CVE Reference:   CVE-2006-5598   (Links to External Site)
Updated:  Jun 3 2008
Original Entry Date:  Oct 18 2006
Impact:   Disclosure of authentication information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of user information
Exploit Included:  Yes
Version(s): prior to 2.0.3
Description:   Lostmon reported a vulnerability in GOOP Gallery. A remote user can conduct cross-site scripting attacks.

The 'index.php' script does not properly filter HTML code from user-supplied input in the 'image' parameter before displaying the input. A remote user can create a specially crafted URL that, when loaded by a target user, will cause arbitrary scripting code to be executed by the target user's browser. The code will originate from the site running the GOOP Gallery software and will run in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

The vendor was notified on October 14, 2006.

Some demonstration exploit URLs are provided:

http://[target]/goopgallery/index.php?next=%BB&gallery=demo+gallery+1&image=Bunny.JPG">[XSS-CODE]

http://[target]/goopgallery/index.php?gallery=demo+gallery+1&image=Bunny.JPG">[XSS-CODE]

################################################

GOOP Gallery contains a flaw that allows a remote cross site
scripting attack. This flaw exists because the application does
not validate 'image' param upon submission to index.php script.
This could allow a user to create a specially crafted URL that
would execute arbitrary code in a user's browser within the
trust relationship between the browser and the server, leading
to a loss of integrity.
