Description:   A vulnerability was reported in IBM AIX in the utape command. A local user can obtain root privileges on the target system. A local user can cause denial of service conditions.

A local user in the system group and with the 'Diagnostics' role can execute arbitrary commands on the target system with root level privileges.

The local user can also overwrite arbitrary files with root privileges, causing denial of service conditions on the target system.

The 'devices.scsi.tape.diag' fileset is affected.

Impact:   A local user in the system group and with the 'Diagnostics' role can obtain root privileges on the target system.

The local user can also cause denial of service conditions on the target system.

Solution:   IBM plans to issue the following fixes:

APAR number for AIX 5.2.0: IY88641 (available approx. 10/18/06)
APAR number for AIX 5.3.0: IY88642 (available approx. 11/01/06)
