Description:   A vulnerability was reported in unalz. A remote user can cause files to be written to arbitrary locations on the target user's system.

A remote user can create an ALZ archive with a specially crafted filename containing '../' characters. When the archive is extracted by the target user, files will be written to arbitrary locations outside of the specified directory.

The vendor was notified on March 2, 2006.

Tan Chew Keong of Secunia Research discovered this vulnerability.

Impact:   A remote user can cause files to be written to arbitrary locations on the target user's system.
Solution:   The vendor has issued a fixed version (0.55), available at:

3) Description of Vulnerability

Secunia Research has discovered a vulnerability in unalz, which
potentially can be exploited by malicious people to compromise a
user's system.

The vulnerability is caused due to an input validation error when
extracting an ALZ archive. This makes it possible to have files
extracted to arbitrary locations outside the specified directory
using the "../" directory traversal sequence.

The vulnerability has been confirmed in version 0.53. Other version
may also be affected.
