NOCC Has Multiple Bugs That Let Remote Users Execute Arbitrary Code and Conduct Cross-Site Scripting Attacks
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1015671
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1015671
CVE Reference:   GENERIC-MAP-NOMATCH   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Feb 23 2006
Impact:   Disclosure of authentication information, Disclosure of system information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of user information, User access via network
Exploit Included:  Yes
Version(s): 1.0
Description:   rgod reported several vulnerabilities in NOCC. A remote user can execute arbitrary code on the target system. A remote user can also conduct cross-site scripting attacks. A remote user can determine the installation path.

The 'html/footer.php' does not properly validate user-supplied input in the 'nocc_theme' session parameter. If magic_quotes_gpc is disabled and register_globals is enabled, a remote user can supply a specially crafted URL to cause the target system to include and execute arbitrary PHP code from a location on the target system. The PHP code, including operating system commands, will run with the privileges of the target web service.

A demonstration exploit URL is provided:

http://[target]/[path]/html/footer.php?_SESSION[nocc_theme]=../../../../../../../etc/passwd%00

A similar vulnerability exists in 'common.php', but can be exploit regardless of the magic_quotes_gpc settings:

http://[target]/[path]/index.php?lang=../../../../../../../../../etc/passwd%00

The 'Accept-Language' HTTP request parameter is also affected.

The 'theme' parameter is also affected:

http://[target]/[path]/index.php?theme=../../../../../../../../../etc/passwd%00
http://[target]/[path]/index.php?theme=../../../../../../../../../boot.ini%00

A remote authenticated user can upload arbitrary code in an e-mail attachment and then attempt to load the file from its temporary storage location using the previously described include file vulnerability.

A remote authenticated user can submit specially crafted PHP code in the 'full name' field when setting their profile.

Several scripts do not properly filter HTML code from user-supplied input before displaying the input. A remote user can create a specially crafted URL that, when loaded by a target user, will cause arbitrary scripting code to be executed by the target user's browser. The code will originate from the site running the NOCC software and will run in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

Some demonstration exploit URLs are provided:

http://[target]/[path]/html/error.php?html_error_occurred=<script>alert(document.cookie)</script>
http://[target]/[path]/html/filter_prefs.php?html_filter_select=<script>alert(document.cookie)</script>
http://[target]/[path]/html/no_mail.php?html_no_mail=<script>alert(document.cookie)</script>
http://[target]/[path]/html/html_bottom_table.php?page_line=<script>alert(document.cookie)</script>
http://[target]/[path]/html/html_bottom_table.php?prev=<script>alert(document.cookie)</script>
http://[target]/[path]/html/html_bottom_table.php?next=<script>alert(document.cookie)</script>

If register_globals is enabled, the 'footer.php' script can be exploited for cross-site scripting attacks:

http://[target]/[path]/html/footer.php?_SESSION[nocc_theme]="><script>alert(document.cookie)</script>

A remote user can load the following URL to view files and e-mail addresses:

http://[target]/[path]/profiles/

A remote user can load the following URL to determine the installation path:

http://[target]/[path]/html/header.php
