Description:
A vulnerability was reported in Mozilla Firefox. A remote user can cause denial of service conditions.
A remote user can create a web page with a specially crafted (and very long) title. When the target user loads the page, the title will be saved to the 'history.dat' file. The next time the target user tries to open Firefox, a buffer overflow will be triggered and the browser will appear to hang.
The original report indicates that it may be possible to cause arbitrary code to be executed, but code execution is not confirmed in the report.
ZIPLOCK reported this vulnerability.
The original advisory is available at:
http://www.addict3d.org/index.php?page=viewarticle&type=security&ID=5494
The vendor disputes the extent of this claim. The vendor indicates that an affected browser may take a long time to load (up to a few minutes on a slow computer), but that it will not crash. The vendor also indicates that there is no evidence that arbitrary code execution is possible.
The vendor's response is available at:
http://www.mozilla.org/security/history-title.html
|
Impact:
A remote user can prevent a target user's browser from being able to be loaded. A remote user may also be able to cause arbitrary code to be executed on the target user's system.
[Editor's note: The vendor disputes the extent of these claims.]
|
Solution:
The vendor has issued a fixed version (1.5.0.1).
