OTRS Input Validation Bugs Permit SQL Injection and Cross-Site Scripting Attacks
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1015262
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1015262
CVE Reference:   GENERIC-MAP-NOMATCH   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Nov 24 2005
Impact:   Disclosure of authentication information, Disclosure of system information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of user information, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes  Exploit Included:  Yes
Version(s): 1.x up to and including 1.3.2; 2.x up to and including 2.0.3.
Description:   Several vulnerabilities were reported in OTRS. A remote user can inject SQL commands and conduct cross-site scripting attacks.

The software does not properly validate user-supplied input. A remote user can supply specially crafted parameter values to execute SQL commands on the underlying database. The 'User' parameter in the 'Login' function is affected. The 'TicketID' and 'ArticleID' parameters in the 'AgentTicketPlain' function are also affected.

Some demonstration exploit URLs are provided:

[OTRS_BaseURI]/index.pl?Action=Login&User=%27[SQL_HERE]

[OTRS_BaseURI]/admin/index.pl?Action=AgentTicketPlain&ArticleID=1&TicketID=1%20[SQL_HERE]

[OTRS_BaseURI]/admin/index.pl?Action=AgentTicketPlain&TicketID=1&ArticleID=1%20[SQL_HERE]

Several scripts do not properly filter HTML code from user-supplied input before displaying the input. A remote user can create a specially crafted HTML e-mail that, when processed by a target queue moderator user via the attachment download button, will cause arbitrary scripting code to be executed by the target user's browser. The code will originate from the site running the OTRS software and will run in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

The 'QueueID' and 'Action' parameters are not properly filtered. A remote user can create a specially crafted URL that, when loaded by a target authenticated user, will cause arbitrary scripting code to be executed by the target user's browser.

Some demonstration exploit URLs are provided:

[OTRS_BaseURI]/index.pl?QueueID=%22%3E%3Cscript%3Ealert('[XSS_HERE]')%3B%3C/script%3E%3Cx%20y=%22

[OTRS_BaseURI]/index.pl?Action="><script>alert(document.title);</script><x%20"

The vendor credits Moritz Naumann (Naumann IT Consulting & Services) with discovering these vulnerabilities.

Impact:   A remote user can access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site running the OTRS software, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

A remote user can execute SQL commands on the underlying database.

Solution:   The vendor has issued fixed versions (2.0.4 and 1.3.3), available at:

ftp://ftp.otrs.org/
