Description:   Manuel Lopez reported some vulnerabilities in Expinion News Manager Lite. A remote user can hijack the administrator's account, inject SQL commands, and conduct cross-site scripting attacks.

It is reported that the application does not properly validate user-supplied input in several fields. A remote user can create a specially crafted URL that, when loaded by a target user, will cause arbitrary scripting code to be executed by the target user's browser. The code will originate from the site running the News Manager software and will run in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

Some demonstration exploit URLs are provided:

http://[host]/comment_add.asp?ID=3&email=[XSS]
http://[host]/search.asp?search=[XSS]
http://[host]/category_news_headline.asp?ID=2&n=[XSS]

It is also reported that a remote user can supply a specially crafted request to inject SQL commands to be executed on the underlying database. Some demonstration exploit URLs are provided:

http://[host]/more.asp?ID='[SQL query]
http://[host]/category_news.asp?ID='[SQL]
http://[host]/news_sort.asp?filter='[SQL]

It is also reported that with 'News Manager Lite administration', a remote user can modify their cookies to gain administrative access to the application. A demonstration exploit cookie value is shown:

Cookie: NEWS%5FLOGIN=ADMIN=1&ID=1

Impact:   A remote user can gain administrative access on the target application.

A remote user can execute SQL commands on the underlying database.

A remote user can access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site running the News Manager software, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

Solution:   The vendor has issued a fix.
