Tenable Nessus Bugs Let Remote Authenticated Users Bypass Session Security and Conduct Cross-Site Scripting Attacks
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1040918
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1040918
CVE Reference:   CVE-2018-1147, CVE-2018-1148   (Links to External Site)
Date:  May 16 2018
Impact:   Disclosure of authentication information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of user information
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 7.0.3 and before
Description:   Two vulnerabilities were reported in Tenable Nessus. A remote authenticated user can bypass security restrictions. A remote authenticated user can conduct cross-site scripting attacks.

The software does not properly filter HTML code from user-supplied input in '.nessus' files [CVE-2018-1147]. A remote authenticated user can upload a specially crafted '.nessus' file that, when viewed by the target administrator user, will cause arbitrary scripting code to be executed by the target user's browser. The code will originate from the site running the Tenable Nessus software and will run in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

A remote authenticated user can conduct a session fixation attack to bypass session security controls and maintain access after a password change [CVE-2018-1148].

Toshitsugu Yoneyama of Mitsui Bussan Secure Directions, Inc. and Vincent Yiu of MDSec Consulting reported these vulnerabilities.

Impact:   A remote authenticated user can bypass security controls on the target system.

A remote authenticated user can access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site running the Tenable Nessus software, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

Solution:   The vendor has issued a fix (7.1.0).
