SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1040861
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1040861
CVE Reference:   CVE-2018-8897   (Links to External Site)
Date:  May 9 2018
Impact:   Denial of service via local system
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes

Description:   A vulnerability was reported in the Linux kernel. A local user can cause denial of service conditions on the target system.

The Linux kernel does not properly handle debug exceptions delivered after a stack switch operation via mov SS or pop SS instructions. During the stack switch operation, the exceptions are deferred. As a result, a local user can cause the kernel to crash.

Nick Peterson (Everdox Tech LLC) reported this vulnerability.

Impact:   A local user can cause denial of service conditions on the target system.
Solution:   The vendor has issued a source code fix, available at:

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=d8ba61ba58c88d5207c1ba2f7d9a2280e7d03be9
