PHP Input Validation Flaw in PHAR 404 Error Page Lets Remote Users Conduct Cross-Site Scripting Attacks
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1040363
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1040363
CVE Reference:   CVE-2018-5712   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Feb 12 2018
Impact:   Disclosure of authentication information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of user information
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes  Exploit Included:  Yes

Description:   A vulnerability was reported in PHP. A remote user can conduct cross-site scripting attacks.

The phar 404 error page does not properly filter HTML code from user-supplied file name before displaying the input. A remote user can create a specially crafted URL that, when loaded by a target user, will cause arbitrary scripting code to be executed by the target user's browser. The code will originate from the site running the PHP software and will run in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

Systems configured to render '.phar' files via PHP are affected.

passownz at gmail reported this vulnerability.

Impact:   A remote user can access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site running the PHP software, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.
Solution:   The vendor has issued a source code fix [in January 2018], available at:

CVE-2018-5712 php: reflected XSS in .phar 404 page

When creating a .phar file and configuring apache to handle phar files using php, when accessing invalid page the page name is reflected back to the user in the 404 response. this user input is not being sanitized and therefor it is vulnerable to a reflected XSS.

meaning, every site which configured to run .phar files using php is vulnerable.
