Description:   Two vulnerabilities were reported in VMware Workstation/Fusion. A local user can obtain potentially sensitive information on the host system. A local user can bypass security restrictions on the guest system.

A local user on the guest system can trigger an out-of-bounds memory read error in Cortado ThinPrint ('TPView.dll') to obtain potentially sensitive information from the host system [CVE-2017-4948]. VMware Workstation 12.x and 14.x for Windows are affected.

A local user on a guest system can exploit a flaw in Unity mode to bypass a locked Windows virtual machine and execute an application on the virtual machine [CVE-2017-4945].

Yakun Zhang of McAfee and Tudor Enache of the United Arab Emirates Computer Emergency Response Team (aeCERT) reported these vulnerabilities.

Impact:   A local user can obtain potentially sensitive information on the host system.

A local user can bypass security controls on the target system.

Solution:   VMware has issued a fix.

For VMware Workstation 14.x: 14.1.0; VMware Tools 10.2.0 (on each virtual machine)

For VMware Fusion 10.x: VMware Tools 10.2.0 (on each virtual machine)

[Editor's note: A patch for CVE-2017-4948 for Workstation 12.x is not planned. A patch for CVE-2017-4945 for Workstation 12.x and for Fusion 8.x is not planned.]
