SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1040007
SecurityTracker URL:
CVE Reference:   CVE-2017-15944   (Links to External Site)
Updated:  Dec 19 2017
Original Entry Date:  Dec 13 2017
Impact:   Execution of arbitrary code via network, Root access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes

Description:   A vulnerability was reported in Palo Alto PAN-OS. A remote user can execute arbitrary commands on the target system.

A remote user can exploit a combination of vulnerabilities in the management interface to execute arbitrary commands on the target system. The code will run with root privileges.

A remote user can exploit a deserialization error in processing the PHPSESSID cookie to modify the session file, triggering an XML injection cookie injection error, which bypasses the panAuthCheck authentication directive controlling access to the '/php' directory. A remote user can then conduct an XML injection attack against the '/php/utils/router.php' script to create arbitrary directories on the target system. A remote user can then conduct a command injection attack against the '/usr/local/bin/' cron script to execute arbitrary system commands with root privileges.

The vendor was notified on July 9, 2017.

Philip Pettersson reported this vulnerability.

Impact:   A remote user can execute arbitrary commands with root privileges on the target system.
Solution:   The vendor has issued a fix (6.1.19, 7.0.19, 7.1.14, 8.0.6).
