VMware AirWatch Console Bugs Let Remote Authenticted Users Conduct Cross-Site Scripting and Log File Injection Attacks and Let Local Users Gain Elevated Privileges
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1039750
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1039750
CVE Reference:   CVE-2017-4930, CVE-2017-4931, CVE-2017-4932   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Nov 9 2017
Impact:   Disclosure of authentication information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of system information, Modification of user information, User access via local system
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes

Description:   Several vulnerabilities were reported in VMware AirWatch. A remote authenticated user can modify log files on the target system. A remote authenticated user can conduct cross-site scripting attacks. A local user can obtain elevated privileges on the target system.

The AirWatch Console does not properly filter HTML code from user-supplied input before displaying the input [CVE-2017-4930. A remote authenticated user can create a specially crafted URL that, when loaded by a target user, will cause arbitrary scripting code to be executed by the target user's browser. The code will originate from the site running the VMware AirWatch software and will run in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

The enrolled device's 'Links' page is affected.

A remote authenticated user can exploit a flaw in the AirWatch Console to add data to the target enrolled device's CSV log files [CVE-2017-4931].

A local user can exploit a flaw in the AirWatch Launcher for Android to gain elevated privileges [CVE-2017-4932].

Nicodemo Gawronski and Igor Shmakov reported these vulnerabilities.

Impact:   A remote authenticated user can modify log files on the target system.

A local user can obtain elevated privileges on the target system.

A remote user can access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site running the VMware AirWatch Console software, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

Solution:   VMware has issued a fix (AirWatch Console 9.2.0, AirWatch Launcher for Android 3.2.2).
