CVE Reference:   CVE-2017-0297, CVE-2017-0299, CVE-2017-8464, CVE-2017-8466, CVE-2017-8493   (Links to External Site)
Updated:  Aug 9 2017
Original Entry Date:  Jun 13 2017
Impact:   Disclosure of system information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via local system, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 7 SP1, 2008 R2 SP1, 2008 SP2, 2012, 2012 R2, 2016, 8.1, RT 8.1, 10, 10 Version 1511, 10 Version 1607, 10 Version 1703
Description:   Multiple vulnerabilities were reported in Windows Kernel. A remote user can cause arbitrary code to be executed on the target user's system. A local user can obtain potentially sensitive information. A local user can obtain elevated privileges on the target system. A local user can bypass security restrictions.

A local user can run a specially crafted application to trigger a memory address initialization error in the kernel and obtain potentially sensitive information that may allow the user to bypass Kernel Address Space Layout Randomization (KASLR) [CVE-2017-0299].

A local user can run a specially crafted application to trigger an object memory handling error and execute arbitrary code on the target system with elevated privileges [CVE-2017-0297].

A remote user can create a specially crafted 'LNK' shortcut that, when the icon is displayed on the target user's system, will execute arbitrary code on the target user's system [CVE-2017-8464].

A local user can run a specially crafted application to trigger an object memory handling error in Windows cursor and execute arbitrary code on the target system with elevated privilege [CVE-2017-8466].

A local user can run a specially crafted application to trigger a case sensitive error and bypass Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) variable security [CVE-2017-8493].

Peter Hlavaty (@zer0mem), KeenLab, Tencent, Mateusz Jurczyk of Google Project Zero, Tencent Security - Team Sniper (Keen Lab and PC Mgr) (via Trend Micro's Zero Day Initiative (ZDI)), and Nicolas Joly of MSRCE UK reported these vulnerabilities.

Impact:   A remote user can create content that, when loaded by the target user, will execute arbitrary code on the target user's system.

A local user can obtain potentially sensitive information on the target system.

A local user can obtain elevated privileges on the target system.

A local user can bypass security controls on the target system.

Solution:   The vendor has issued a fix.

On August 8, 2017, Microsoft updated their bulletin to announce that they issued a revised fix for CVE-2017-0299 as part of the August 2017 security updates to fully correct the vulnerability.
