Date:  Nov 9 2016
Impact:   Disclosure of authentication information, Disclosure of system information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of user information, User access via network

Version(s): 2012 SP2, 2012 SP3, 2014 SP1, 2014 SP2, 2016
Description:   Multiple vulnerabilities were reported in Microsoft SQL Server. A remote authenticated user can gain elevated privileges. A remote authenticated user can obtain potentially sensitive information on the target system. A remote user can conduct cross-site scripting attacks.

The MDS API does not properly filter HTML code from user-supplied input before displaying the input [CVE-2016-7251]. A remote user can cause arbitrary scripting code to be executed by the target user's browser. The code will originate from the site running the Microsoft SQL Server MDS software and will run in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

A remote authenticated user can trigger a pointer casting error to gain elevated privileges on the target system [CVE-2016-7249, CVE-2016-7250, CVE-2016-7254].

A remote authenticated user can trigger a flaw in SQL Analysis Services in the checking of a FILESTREAM path to obtain potentially sensitive information on the target system [CVE-2016-7252].

A remote authenticated user can trigger an access control list flaw on 'atxcore.dll' in the SQL Server Agent to gain elevated privileges on the target system [CVE-2016-7253].

Scott Sutherland of netSPI reported a privilege escalation vulnerability.

Impact:   A remote authenticated user can gain elevated privileges on the target system.

A remote authenticated user can obtain potentially sensitive information on the target system.

A remote user can access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site running the Microsoft SQL Server software, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

Solution:   The vendor has issued a fix.

A patch matrix is available in the vendor advisory.
