Apache Archiva Input Validation Flaws Let Remote Users Conduct Cross-Site Request Forgery and Cross-Site Scripting Attacks
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1036475
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1036475
CVE Reference:   CVE-2016-4469, CVE-2016-5005   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Jul 29 2016
Impact:   Disclosure of authentication information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of user information
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 1.3.9 and prior
Description:   Two vulnerabilities were reported in Apache Archiva. A remote user can conduct cross-site request forgery attacks. A remote user can conduct cross-site scripting attacks.

Several pages do not provide cross-site request forgery (CSRF) protection [CVE-2016-4469]. A remote user can create a specially crafted HTML page or URL that, when loaded by the target authenticated administrative user, will take actions on the target interface acting as the target user.

The 'addProxyConnector_commit.action', 'addRepository_commit.action', 'editRepository_commit.action', 'addLegacyArtifactPath_commit.action', and 'saveAppearance.action' administrative functions are affected. The 'upload_submit.action' function is also affected.

The software does not properly filter HTML code from user-supplied input before displaying the input [CVE-2016-5005]. A remote authenticated administrative user can cause arbitrary scripting code to be executed by the target authenticated administrative user's browser. The code will originate from the site running the Apache Archiva software and will run in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

Julien Ahrens of RCE Security reported these vulnerabilities.

Impact:   A remote user can take actions on the target system acting as the target authenticated administrative user.

A remote authenticated administrative user can access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site running the Apache Archiva software, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

Solution:   The affected version is no longer supported. The vendor recommends upgrading to version 2.2.1.
