SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1035567
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1035567
CVE Reference:   CVE-2016-82012, CVE-2016-82013   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Apr 14 2016
Impact:   Denial of service via network, Disclosure of authentication information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of user information
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 6.0 - 6.5.6
Description:   Two vulnerabilities were reported in Tenable Nessus. A remote authenticated user can conduct cross-site scripting attacks. A remote authenticated user can conduct XML external entity attacks to deny service on the target system.

The software does not properly filter HTML code from user-supplied input before displaying the input [CVE-2016-82012]. A remote authenticated user can cause arbitrary scripting code to be executed by the target user's browser. The code will originate from the site running the Tenable Nessus software and will run in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

A remote authenticated user can supply specially crafted XML External Entity (XXE) data to the target interface to deny service on the target system [CVE-2016-82013].

Tenable and Synacktiv reported these vulnerabilities.

Impact:   A remote authenticated user can access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site running the Tenable Nessus software, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

A remote authenticated user can deny service on the target system.

Solution:   The vendor has issued a fix (6.6).
