Tenable Nessus Bugs Let Local Users on a Scanned System Gain Elevated Privileges and Remote Users Conduct Cross-Site Scripting Attacks Against the Scanner
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1035044
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1035044
CVE Reference:   CVE-2016-82000, CVE-2016-82001   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Feb 18 2016
Impact:   Disclosure of authentication information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of user information, Root access via local system
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 5.x, 6.0 - 6.5.4
Description:   Two vulnerabilities were reported in Tenable Nessus. A local user on the system being scanned can obtain root privileges on the target system. A remote user can conduct cross-site scripting attacks against the scanning system.

The 'Host Details' section does not properly filter HTML code from user-supplied input before displaying the input [CVE-2016-82000]. A remote user (server) being scanned by the target Nessus system can return specially crafted parameter values to cause arbitrary scripting code to be executed by the target user's browser when the target user views the scan report. The code will originate from the site running the Tenable Nessus software and will run in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

Nessus UI versions 2.0.0 and later are affected.

A local user (server) on an Apple OS X system being scanned by Nessus using credentials can cause arbitrary commands to be executed the target Apple OS X system with root privileges [CVE-2016-82001]. The system hosting the Nessus scanner is not affected.

Carl Purvis from Security-Assessment.com reported the cross-site scripting vulnerability.

Impact:   A local user can obtain root privileges on the target system.

A remote user can access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site running the Tenable Nessus software, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

Solution:   The vendor has issued a fix (6.5.5).
