Citrix NetScaler Service Delivery Appliance Bugs Let Local Users Obtain Potentially Sensitive Information and Remote Users Conduct Cross-Site Scripting Attack and Obtain Passwords
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1034167
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1034167
CVE Reference:   CVE-2015-7996, CVE-2015-7997, CVE-2015-7998   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Nov 17 2015
Impact:   Disclosure of authentication information, Disclosure of system information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of user information
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 10.1, 10.5, 10.5.e
Description:   Several vulnerabilities were reported in Citrix NetScaler Service Delivery Appliance. A local user can obtain potentially sensitive information. A remote or local user can obtain passwords on the target system. A remote user can conduct cross-site scripting attacks.

The Nitro API stores passwords in cleartext in the user's browser cache [CVE-2015-7996]. A remote or local user may be able to obtain passwords from the target user's browser cache.

The User Interface Nitro API does not properly filter HTML code from user-supplied input before displaying the input [CVE-2015-7997]. A remote user can cause arbitrary scripting code to be executed by the target user's browser. The code will originate from the Citrix NetScaler Nitro API interface and will run in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

A local user can exploit a flaw in the administration user interface to obtain potentially sensitive information on the target system [CVE-2015-7998].

Impact:   A local user can obtain potentially sensitive information on the target system.

A remote or local user may be able to obtain passwords from the target user's browser cache.

A remote user can access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the Citrix NetScaler Nitro API interface, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the interface, or take actions on the interface acting as the target user.

Solution:   The vendor has issued a fix (10.1 Build 133.9, 10.5 Build 58.11, 10.5.e Build 56.1505.e).

[Editor's note: The vendor states that version 11.0.x is not affected in versions 11.0 Build 55.20 and after.]
