Microsoft .NET Bugs Let Local Users Bypass ASLR and Remote Users Obtain Files and Conduct Cross-Site Scripting Attacks
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1034116
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1034116
CVE Reference:   CVE-2015-6096, CVE-2015-6099, CVE-2015-6115   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Nov 10 2015
Impact:   Disclosure of authentication information, Disclosure of system information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of user information
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 2.0 SP2, 3.5, 3.5.1, 4.0, 4.5, 4.5.1, 4.5.2, 4.6
Description:   Several vulnerabilities were reported in Microsoft .NET. A local user can bypass security restrictions. A remote user can obtain files on the target system. A remote user can conduct cross-site scripting attacks.

The DTD parsing code does not properly parse XML files [CVE-2015-6096]. A remote user can create an application file containing a specially crafted XML file that, when opened by the target user, will gain read access to files on the target user's system.

A local user can bypass address space layout randomization (ASLR) controls on the target system [CVE-2015-6115].

The software does not properly filter HTML code from user-supplied input before displaying the input [CVE-2015-6099]. A remote user can cause arbitrary scripting code to be executed by the target user's browser. The code will originate from the site running the Microsoft .NET software and will run in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

John Page reported the cross-site scripting vulnerability.

Impact:   A local user can bypass security controls on the target system.

A remote user can obtain files on the target system.

A remote user can access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site running the Microsoft .NET software, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

Solution:   The vendor has issued a fix.

A patch matrix is available in the vendor advisory.
