Citrix NetScaler ADC and NetScaler Gateway Bug Lets Remote Users Conduct Cross-Site Scripting Attacks and Remote Authenticated Users Gain Elevated Privileges
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1033618
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1033618
CVE Reference:   CVE-2015-5538, CVE-2015-6672   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Sep 19 2015
Impact:   Disclosure of authentication information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of user information, Root access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 10.1.x, 10.5.x
Description:   Two vulnerabilities were reported in Citrix NetScaler ADC and Gateway. A remote authenticated user can gain elevated privileges. A remote user can conduct cross-site scripting attacks.

A remote authenticated user can exploit an unspecified flaw in the command line interface and web user interface to execute commands with root privileges on the target device [CVE-2015-5538].

The web interface does not properly filter HTML code from user-supplied input before displaying the input [CVE-2015-6672]. A remote user can cause arbitrary scripting code to be executed by the target user's browser. The code will originate from the Citrix NetScaler interface and will run in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

David Johansson of Cigital reported these vulnerabilities.

Impact:   A remote authenticated user can gain elevated privileges on the target system.

A remote user can access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the Citrix NetScaler interface, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the interface, or take actions on the interface acting as the target user.

Solution:   The vendor has issued a fix (10.1 Build 132.8, 10.5.e Build 56.1505.e, 10.5 Build 57.7).

The vendor's advisory is available at:
