TYPO3 Input Validation Flaw in sanitizeLocalUrl() Lets Remote Conduct Cross-Site Scripting Attacks
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1033551
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1033551
CVE Reference:   CVE-2015-5956   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Sep 14 2015
Impact:   Disclosure of authentication information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of user information
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes  Exploit Included:  Yes
Version(s): 6.2.0 to 6.2.14, 7.0.0 to 7.3.0
Description:   A vulnerability was reported in TYPO3. A remote user can conduct cross-site scripting attacks.

The sanitizeLocalUrl() function does not properly filter HTML code from user-supplied Base64-encoded input before displaying the input. A remote user can create a specially crafted URL that, when loaded by a target user, will cause arbitrary scripting code to be executed by the target user's browser. The code will originate from the site running the TYPO3 software and will run in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

A demonstration exploit URL for version 6.x is provided:

https://[target]/typo3/index.php?redirect_url=data:text/html;base64,%20PHNjcmlwdD5hbGVydCgnWFNTJyk8L3NjcmlwdD4=

For version 7.x, knowledge of the 'moduleToken' value is required to exploit this flaw.

Julien Ahrens (secunet Security Networks AG) reported this vulnerability.

Impact:   A remote user can access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site running the TYPO3 software, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.
Solution:   The vendor has issued a fix (6.2.15, 7.4.0).

The vendor's advisory is available at:
