Symantec Critical System Protection Multiple Flaws Let Remote Authenticated Users Execute Arbitrary Code, Inject SQL Commands, Conduct Cross-Site Scripting Attacks, and Obtain Potentially Sensitive Information
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1031566
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1031566
CVE Reference:   CVE-2014-3440, CVE-2014-7289, CVE-2014-9224, CVE-2014-9225, CVE-2014-9226   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Jan 20 2015
Impact:   Disclosure of authentication information, Disclosure of system information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of user information, User access via local system, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 5.2.9.x prior to 5.2.9 MP6
Description:   Multiple vulnerabilities were reported in Symantec Critical System Protection. A remote authenticated user can execute arbitrary code on the target system. A remote user can conduct cross-site scripting attacks. A remote authenticated user can inject SQL commands. A remote authenticated user can obtain potentially sensitive information. A local user can bypass security policy.

A remote authenticated user can create a specially crafted log file that, when uploaded via the the management server agent control interface, will execute arbitrary commands on the target system with elevated privileges [CVE-2014-3440].

Balint Varga-Perke with Silent Signal (via Beyond Security) reported this vulnerability.

A remote authenticated user can supply a specially crafted HTTP request to execute SQL commands on the underlying database [CVE-2014-7289]. This can be exploited to gain administrative access.

Stefan Viehbock with SEC-Consult reported this vulnerability.

The Management Console server does not properly filter HTML code from user-supplied input before displaying the input [CVE-2014-9224]. A remote user can cause arbitrary scripting code to be executed by the target user's browser. The code will originate from the site running the Symantec Critical System Protection software and will run in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

Stefan Viehbock with SEC-Consult reported this vulnerability.

The management server does not properly restrict access to internal server information [CVE-2014-9225]. A remote authenticated user can obtain potentially sensitive information.

Stefan Viehbock with SEC-Consult reported this vulnerability.

The system's default protection policies do not properly restrict access in certain cases [CVE-2014-9226]. A local user can bypass deployed protection policies to gain access to restricted functions on a host.

Stefan Viehbock with SEC-Consult reported this vulnerability.

Symantec Data Center Security is also affected by these vulnerabilities.

Impact:   A remote authenticated user can execute arbitrary commands on the target system.

A remote user can access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site running the Symantec Critical System Protection software, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

A remote authenticated user can execute SQL commands on the underlying database.

A remote authenticated user can obtain potentially sensitive information.

A local user can bypass security policy.

Solution:   The vendor has issued a fix (5.2.9 MP6).

The vendor's advisory is available at:
