(Red Hat Issues Fix for NSS) Mozilla Firefox Race Condition in libnss CERT_DestroyCertificate() Lets Remote Users Execute Arbitrary Code
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1030814
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1030814
CVE Reference:   CVE-2014-1544   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Sep 9 2014
Impact:   Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes

Description:   A vulnerability was reported in Mozilla Firefox. A remote user can cause arbitrary code to be executed on the target user's system. NSS is affected.

A remote user can create a specially crafted certificate that, when loaded by the target user, will trigger a use-after-free and execute arbitrary code on the target system.

The flaw can be triggered when a pair of NSSCertificate structures are added to a trust domain and then one of the structures is removed while still in use by the trusted cache.

Tyson Smith and Jesse Schwartzentruber reported this vulnerability.

Impact:   A remote user can create a certificate that, when loaded by the target user, will execute arbitrary code on the target user's system.
Solution:   Red Hat has issued a fix.

1. Summary:

Updated nss packages that fix one security issue are now available for Red
Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Extended Life Cycle Support.

Red Hat Product Security has rated this update as having Critical security
impact. A Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) base score, which
gives a detailed severity rating, is available from the CVE link in the
References section.

2. Relevant releases/architectures:

Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS (v. 4 ELS) - i386, ia64, x86_64
Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES (v. 4 ELS) - i386, x86_64

3. Description:

Network Security Services (NSS) is a set of libraries designed to support
the cross-platform development of security-enabled client and server
applications. Netscape Portable Runtime (NSPR) provides platform
independence for non-GUI operating system facilities.

A race condition was found in the way NSS verified certain certificates.
A remote attacker could use this flaw to crash an application using NSS or,
possibly, execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user running
that application. (CVE-2014-1544)

Red Hat would like to thank the Mozilla project for reporting this issue.
Upstream acknowledges Tyson Smith and Jesse Schwartzentruber as the
original reporters.

All NSS users are advised to upgrade to these updated packages, which
contain a backported patch to correct this issue. After installing this
update, applications using NSS must be restarted for this update to take
effect.

4. Solution:

Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata
relevant to your system have been applied.

This update is available via the Red Hat Network. Details on how to use the
Red Hat Network to apply this update are available at
https://access.redhat.com/articles/11258

5. Bugs fixed (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/):
