Microsoft SQL Server Bugs Let Remote Users Conduct Cross-Site Scripting Attacks and Local Users Deny Service
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1030716
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1030716
CVE Reference:   CVE-2014-1820, CVE-2014-4061   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Aug 12 2014
Impact:   Denial of service via local system, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of user information
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 2008 SP3, 2008 R2 SP2, 2012 SP1, 2014
Description:   A vulnerability was reported in Microsoft SQL Server. A local user can cause denial of service conditions. A remote user can conduct cross-site scripting attacks.

A local user can supply a specially crafted Transact-SQL (T-SQL) query to trigger a stack overrun and cause the target system to stop responding [CVE-2014-4061]. A manual reboot is required to return the system to normal operation.

The SQL Master Data Services (MDS) does not properly filter HTML code from user-supplied input before displaying the input [CVE-2014-1820]. A remote user can create a specially crafted URL or web content that, when loaded by a target user, will cause arbitrary scripting code to be executed by the target user's browser. The code will originate from the Microsoft SQL Server inteface and will run in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be able to take actions on the site acting as the target user.

Impact:   A local user can cause the the target system to stop responding.

A remote user can take actions on the database acting as the target user.

Solution:   The vendor has issued the following fixes:
