Apache ActiveMQ Bugs Let Remote Users Conduct Cross-Site Scripting Attacks, Deny Service, and Obtain Potentially Sensitive Information
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1028457
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1028457
CVE Reference:   CVE-2012-6092, CVE-2012-6551, CVE-2013-3060   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Apr 22 2013
Impact:   Denial of service via network, Disclosure of authentication information, Disclosure of system information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of user information
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): prior to 5.8.0
Description:   Several vulnerabilities were reported in Apache ActiveMQ. A remote user can cause denial of service conditions. A remote user can conduct cross-site scripting attacks. A remote user can obtain potentially sensitive information.

Several web demos do not properly filter HTML code from user-supplied input before displaying the input [CVE-2012-6092]. A remote user can create a specially crafted URL that, when loaded by a target user, will cause arbitrary scripting code to be executed by the target user's browser. The code will originate from the site running the ActiveMQ software and will run in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

The 'refresh' parameter of 'PortfolioPublishServlet.java' is affected. Debug logs are affected. Ssubscribe messages in 'webapp/websocket/chat.js' are affected.

A remote user can send specially crafted requests to a sample web application to consume excessive resources on the target system [CVE-2012-6551].

A remote user can connect to the web console without authentication to obtain potentially sensitive information [CVE-2013-3060].

Impact:   A remote user can cause denial of service conditions.

A remote user can access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site running the ActiveMQ software, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

A remote user can obtain potentially sensitive information.

Solution:   The vendor has issued a fix (5.8.0).
