McAfee Email Gateway Bugs Permit Cross-Site Scripting and Denial of Service Attacks
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1027823
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1027823
CVE Reference:   GENERIC-MAP-NOMATCH   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Nov 30 2012
Impact:   Denial of service via network, Disclosure of authentication information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of user information
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 7.0, 7.0.1, 7.0.2
Description:   Two vulnerabilities were reported in McAfee Email Gateway. A remote user can cause denial of service conditions. A remote user can conduct cross-site scripting attacks.

The software does not properly filter HTML code from user-supplied email attachment names before displaying the input. A remote user can send an email with a specially crafted attachment name. When the target user interacts with message attachments, arbitrary scripting code will be executed by the target user's browser. The code will originate from the McAfee Email Gateway device and will run in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

The software does not properly verify administrative settings for generating email via the Secure Web Mail Client. A remote user that can hijack an active session cookie can create messages on the target device to consume all available disk space on the target device.

Version 6.72 is not affected by these vulnerabilities.

Oliver R. Gruskovnjak of Portcullis Security reported these vulnerabilities.

Impact:   A remote user can consume all available disk space on the target device.

A remote user can access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the McAfee Email Gateway, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

Solution:   The vendor has issued a fix (MEG 7.0 Hotfix 116 for version 7.0.2).
