(Red Hat Issues Fix) libpng Chunk Decompression Heap Overflow Lets Remote Users Execute Arbitrary Code
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1026710
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1026710
CVE Reference:   CVE-2011-3026   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Feb 21 2012
Impact:   Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 1.4.x, 1.6.x
Description:   A vulnerability was reported in libpng. A remote user can cause arbitrary code to be executed on the target user's system.

The software does not properly verify a size value when allocating memory during chunk decompression. A remote user can create a specially crafted PNG image file that, when loaded by the target user or application, will trigger a heap overflow in png_decompress_chunk() and execute arbitrary code on the target system. The code will run with the privileges of the target user or application.

The vulnerability resides in 'pngrutil.c'.

Jueri Aedla reported this vulnerability.

Impact:   A remote user can create a PNG image file that, when loaded by the target user or application, will execute arbitrary code on the target system.
Solution:   Red Hat issues fix.

3. Description:

The libpng packages contain a library of functions for creating and
manipulating PNG (Portable Network Graphics) image format files.

A heap-based buffer overflow flaw was found in libpng. An attacker could
create a specially-crafted PNG image that, when opened, could cause an
application using libpng to crash or, possibly, execute arbitrary code with
the privileges of the user running the application. (CVE-2011-3026)

Users of libpng and libpng10 should upgrade to these updated packages,
which contain a backported patch to correct this issue. All running
applications using libpng or libpng10 must be restarted for the update to
take effect.

4. Solution:

Before applying this update, make sure all previously-released errata
relevant to your system have been applied.

This update is available via the Red Hat Network. Details on how to
use the Red Hat Network to apply this update are available at
https://access.redhat.com/kb/docs/DOC-11259
