Microsoft Anti-Cross Site Scripting Library Flaw May Permit Cross-Site Scripting Attacks
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1026499
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1026499
CVE Reference:   CVE-2012-0007   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Jan 10 2012
Impact:   Disclosure of authentication information, Disclosure of system information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of user information
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 3.x, 4.0
Description:   A vulnerability was reported in Microsoft Anti-Cross Site Scripting Library. A remote user may be able to conduct cross-site scripting attacks.

The library does not properly filter HTML code from user-supplied input. A remote user may be able to exploit a target application that uses the library to cause arbitrary scripting code to be executed by the target user's browser. The code will originate from the application using the Microsoft Anti-Cross Site Scripting Library software and will run in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

The specific impact depends on how the target application uses the library.

Adi Cohen of IBM Rational Application Security reported this vulnerability.

Impact:   A remote user may be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the application using the Microsoft Anti-Cross Site Scripting Library, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

A remote user can determine the installation path.

Solution:   The vendor has issued the following fixes:

Microsoft Anti-Cross Site Scripting Library V3.x and Microsoft Anti-Cross Site Scripting Library V4.0:
