Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 3.9.4
Description:   A vulnerability was reported in LibTIFF. A remote user can cause arbitrary code to be executed on the target user's system.

A remote user can create a specially crafted CCITT Group 4 encoded TIFF image that, when loaded by the target user or application, will trigger a heap overflow and execute arbitrary code on the target system. The code will run with the privileges of the target user or application.

Apple Product Security reported this vulnerability.

Impact:   A remote user can create a file that, when loaded by the target user or application, will execute arbitrary code on the target system.

3. Description:

The libtiff packages contain a library of functions for manipulating Tagged
Image File Format (TIFF) files.

A heap-based buffer overflow flaw was found in the way libtiff processed
certain TIFF Internet Fax image files, compressed with the CCITT Group 4
compression algorithm. An attacker could use this flaw to create a
specially-crafted TIFF file that, when opened, would cause an application
linked against libtiff to crash or, possibly, execute arbitrary code.
(CVE-2011-0192)

Red Hat would like to thank Apple Product Security for reporting this
issue.

All libtiff users should upgrade to these updated packages, which contain a
backported patch to resolve this issue. All running applications linked
against libtiff must be restarted for this update to take effect.

4. Solution:

Before applying this update, make sure all previously-released errata
relevant to your system have been applied.

This update is available via the Red Hat Network. Details on how to
use the Red Hat Network to apply this update are available at
https://access.redhat.com/kb/docs/DOC-11259
