SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1019720
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1019720
CVE Reference:   CVE-2008-1238   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Mar 27 2008
Impact:   Modification of user information
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): prior to 2.0.0.13
Description:   A vulnerability was reported in Mozilla Firefox. A remote user can spoof the HTTP Referer value in certain cases.

When a request is sent to a URL with Basic Authentication credentials and an empty username value, the browser removes characters from the hostname in the HTTP Referer field. If a target web site relies on the value for security purposes, the remote user may be able to bypass security controls.

Gregory Fleischer reported this vulnerability. RSnake reported the original concept.

Impact:   A remote user can spoof the HTTP Referer value to potentially bypass security controls on the target web site.
Solution:   Red Hat has released a fix.

3. Description:

Mozilla Firefox is an open source Web browser.

Several flaws were found in the processing of some malformed web content. A
web page containing such malicious content could cause Firefox to crash or,
potentially, execute arbitrary code as the user running Firefox.
(CVE-2008-1233, CVE-2008-1235, CVE-2008-1236, CVE-2008-1237)

Several flaws were found in the display of malformed web content. A web
page containing specially-crafted content could, potentially, trick a
Firefox user into surrendering sensitive information. (CVE-2008-1234,
CVE-2008-1238, CVE-2008-1241)

All Firefox users should upgrade to these updated packages, which contain
backported patches that correct these issues.
