(Red Hat Issues Fix for kdegraphics) Xpdf Bugs in streams and t1lib Let Remote Users Execute Arbitrary Code
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1018933
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1018933
CVE Reference:   CVE-2007-4033, CVE-2007-4352, CVE-2007-5392, CVE-2007-5393   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Nov 12 2007
Impact:   Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes

Description:   Several vulnerabilities were reported in Xpdf. A remote user can cause arbitrary code to be executed on the target user's system. kdegraphics is affected.

A remote user can create a specially crafted PDF file that, when loaded by the target user, will execute arbitrary code on the target system. The code will run with the privileges of the target user.

A specially crafted Type 1 font filename can trigger a flaw in the t1lib library and cause code execution [CVE-2007-4033]

Specially crafted data can trigger a memory corruption error in the DCTStream::readProgressiveDataUnit() function in 'xpdf/Stream.cc' [CVE-2007-4352].

Specially crafted data can trigger an integer overflow in the DCTStream::reset() function in 'xpdf/Stream.cc' [CVE-2007-5392].

A specially crafted CCITTFaxDecode filter can trigger a heap overflow in the CCITTFaxStream::lookChar() function in 'xpdf/Stream.cc' [CVE-2007-5393].

The vendor was notified on October 17, 2007.

Alin Rad Pop of Secunia Research reported three of these vulnerabilities. r0ut3r discovered one of these vulnerabilities.

Impact:   A remote user can create a file that, when loaded by the target user, will execute arbitrary code on the target user's system.
Solution:   Red Hat has released a fix for CVE-2007-5393 for kdegraphics, which is affected by this vulnerability.

                   Red Hat Security Advisory

Synopsis: Important: kdegraphics security update
Advisory ID: RHSA-2007:1051-01
Advisory URL: https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2007-1051.html
Issue date: 2007-11-12
Updated on: 2007-11-12
Product: Red Hat Enterprise Linux
CVE Names: CVE-2007-5393
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Summary:

Updated kdegraphics packages that fix a security issue are now available
for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.

This update has been rated as having important security impact by the Red
Hat Security Response Team.

2. Relevant releases/architectures:

Red Hat Enterprise Linux Desktop (v. 5 client) - i386, x86_64
RHEL Desktop Workstation (v. 5 client) - i386, x86_64
RHEL Optional Productivity Applications (v. 5 server) - i386, x86_64

3. Problem description:

The kdegraphics packages contain applications for the K Desktop
Environment. This includes kpdf, a PDF file viewer.

Alin Rad Pop discovered a flaw in the handling of PDF files. An attacker
could create a malicious PDF file that would cause kpdf to crash, or
potentially execute arbitrary code when opened. (CVE-2007-5393)

All kdegraphics users are advised to upgrade to these updated packages,
which contain backported patches to resolve this issue.

4. Solution:

Before applying this update, make sure that all previously-released
errata relevant to your system have been applied.

This update is available via Red Hat Network. Details on how to use
the Red Hat Network to apply this update are available at
http://kbase.redhat.com/faq/FAQ_58_10188

5. Bug IDs fixed (http://bugzilla.redhat.com/):

345121 - CVE-2007-5393 xpdf buffer overflow in CCITTFaxStream::lookChar()
