(Red Hat Issues Fix) Ethereal Bugs in Multipe Dissectors Lets Remote Users Execute Arbitrary Code and Remote Deny Service
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1016024
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1016024
CVE Reference:   CVE-2006-1932, CVE-2006-1933, CVE-2006-1934, CVE-2006-1935, CVE-2006-1936, CVE-2006-1937, CVE-2006-1938, CVE-2006-1939, CVE-2006-1940   (Links to External Site)
Date:  May 3 2006
Impact:   Denial of service via network, Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 0.10.14 and prior versions
Description:   A vulnerability was reported in Ethereal. A remote user can execute arbitrary code on the target system. A remote user can cause denial of service conditions.

Several dissectors contain vulnerabilities. A remote user can send specially crafted data to trigger a buffer overflow and execute arbitrary code on the target system. The code will run with the privileges of the target user.

A remote user can send specially crafted data to cause the target service to crash or enter an infinite loop.

The H.248, UMA, X.509if, SRVLOC, H.245, COPS, ALCAP, AIM, RPC, DCERPC, ASN.1, SMB PIPE, BER, SNDCP, GSM SMS, ALCAP, and telnet dissectors are affected.

Also, the Ethereal OID printing routine, statistics counter, and general packet dissectors are affected.

A specially crafted Sniffer capture or invalid display filter can cause Ethereal to crash.

The Network Instruments file code NetXray/Windows Sniffer file code is also affected.

Impact:   A remote user can execute arbitrary code on the target system.

A remote user can cause denial of service conditions.

Solution:   Red Hat has released a fix.

3. Problem description:

Ethereal is a program for monitoring network traffic.

Several denial of service bugs were found in Ethereal's protocol
dissectors. Ethereal could crash or stop responding if it reads a malformed
packet off the network. (CVE-2006-1932, CVE-2006-1933, CVE-2006-1937,
CVE-2006-1938, CVE-2006-1939, CVE-2006-1940)

Several buffer overflow bugs were found in Ethereal's COPS, telnet, and
ALCAP dissectors as well as Network Instruments file code and
NetXray/Windows Sniffer file code. Ethereal could crash or execute
arbitrary code if it reads a malformed packet off the network.
(CVE-2006-1934, CVE-2006-1935, CVE-2006-1936)

Users of ethereal should upgrade to these updated packages containing
version 0.99.0, which is not vulnerable to these issues.

4. Solution:

Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata
relevant to your system have been applied.

This update is available via Red Hat Network. To use Red Hat Network,
launch the Red Hat Update Agent with the following command:

up2date

This will start an interactive process that will result in the appropriate
RPMs being upgraded on your system.

5. Bug IDs fixed (http://bugzilla.redhat.com/):

189906 - CVE-2006-1932 Multiple ethereal issues (CVE-2006-1933, CVE-2006-1934, CVE-2006-1935, CVE-2006-1936, CVE-2006-1937, CVE-2006-1938,
 CVE-2006-1939, CVE-2006-1940)
