VMware ESX Server Input Validation Flaw in Management Interface Log Viewer Permits Cross-Site Scripting Attacks
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1015422
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1015422
CVE Reference:   CVE-2005-3619   (Links to External Site)
Updated:  Jun 2 2006
Original Entry Date:  Dec 29 2005
Impact:   Disclosure of authentication information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of user information
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes  Exploit Included:  Yes
Version(s): 2.0.1, 2.1.2, 2.5.2
Description:   A vulnerability was reported in VMware ESX Server. A remote user can conduct cross-site scripting attacks.

The Management Interface's log file viewer does not properly filter HTML code from syslog data before displaying the input. A remote user can send specially crafted data to be logged by the server. Then, when the target user views the log file, arbitrary scripting code will be executed by the target user's browser. The code will originate from the site running the VMware ESX Server Management Interface software and will run in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

For example, a remote user can attempt to login to the Management Interface with a specially crafted username value. A demonstration exploit value is provided:

</div><script>alert('XSS')</script>

The vendor was notified on November 15, 2005.

The vendor credits Stephen de Vries of Corsaire Limited with reporting this vulnerability.
