(Red Hat Issues Fix) wget Buffer Overflow in Processing NTLM Authentication Values May Let Remote Users Execute Arbitrary Code
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1015136
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1015136
CVE Reference:   CVE-2005-3185   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Nov 2 2005
Impact:   Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): prior to 1.10.2
Description:   iDEFENSE reported a vulnerability in wget. A remote user can cause arbitrary code to be executed on the target user's system.

The software does not properly validate server-supplied NTLM user name data. When the target user connects to a remote server, the remote server can issue an HTTP 30x redirect command that redirects the target user to a URL that includes a specially crafted NTLM user name value to trigger a stack overflow and execute arbitrary code on the target user's system. The code will run with the privileges of the target user.

A user name and domain name that, combined, are longer than 192 bytes will trigger the overflow.

NTLM authentication must be enabled on the client for the exploit to work.

The vendor was notified on October 12, 2005.

The original advisory is available at:

http://www.idefense.com/application/poi/display?id=322&type=vulnerabilities

Impact:   A remote user can cause arbitrary code to be executed on the target user's system when the target user connects to a malicious site.
Solution:   Red Hat has released a fix.

3. Problem description:

GNU Wget is a file retrieval utility that can use either the HTTP or
FTP protocols.

A stack based buffer overflow bug was found in the wget implementation of
NTLM authentication. An attacker could execute arbitrary code on a user's
machine if the user can be tricked into connecting to a malicious web
server using NTLM authentication. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures
project has assigned the name CVE-2005-3185 to this issue.

All users of wget are advised to upgrade to these updated packages, which
contain a backported patch that resolves this issue.

4. Solution:

Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata
relevant to your system have been applied.

This update is available via Red Hat Network. To use Red Hat Network,
launch the Red Hat Update Agent with the following command:

up2date

This will start an interactive process that will result in the appropriate
RPMs being upgraded on your system.

5. Bug IDs fixed (http://bugzilla.redhat.com/):

170666 - CVE-2005-3185 NTLM buffer overflow
