Macromedia ColdFusion MX Input Validation Flaw in JRun Error Page Lets Remote Users Conduct Cross-Site Scripting Attacks
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1013931
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1013931
CVE Reference:   GENERIC-MAP-NOMATCH   (Links to External Site)
Date:  May 11 2005
Impact:   Disclosure of authentication information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of user information
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): MX 7.0
Description:   A vulnerability was reported in Macromedia ColdFusion MX in a default error page. A remote user can conduct cross-site scripting attacks.

The default error page in the optional-use JRun Web Server that is bundled with ColdFusion does not properly validate user-supplied input. A remote user can create a specially crafted URL that, when loaded by a target user, will cause arbitrary scripting code to be executed by the target user's browser. The code will originate from the site running the ColdFusion software and will run in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

Systems that use connectors to any other web server (e.g., IIS, Apache) are not affected.

Impact:   A remote user can access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site running the ColdFusion software, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.
Solution:   The vendor has issued a fix, available at:

http://download.macromedia.com/pub/coldfusion/hotfix/chf70-60112.jar

Instructions are available in the vendor's advisory at:

http://www.macromedia.com/devnet/security/security_zone/mpsb05-03.html

The vendor notes that the JRun Web Server is not recommended for use in production environments and is intended for configuration, evaluation, and testing purposes only.
