(Debian Issues Fix) cpio -O Unsafe umask May Let Local Users Read or Overwrite Archives
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1013071
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1013071
CVE Reference:   CAN-1999-1572   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Feb 3 2005
Impact:   Disclosure of user information, Modification of user information
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes

Description:   A vulnerability was reported in cpio as distributed with FreeBSD and possibly affecting other operating systems. A local user may be able to read archived files.

In 1996, Georg-W. Koltermann reported that cpio uses a umask of '0' when creating files using the '-O' archive option. As a result, the files are created with mode 0666, allowing a local user to read or overwrite the files.

The flaw resides in 'cpio/main.c'.

The original FreeBSD problem report is available at:

http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=bin/1391

[Editor's note: This issue from 1996/1997 is being added to our database because a CVE entry for this issue was generated on January 29, 2005.]

Impact:   A local user can read or overwrite archives.
Solution:   Debian has released a fix.
