(Mandrake Issues Fix) Ethereal Bugs in COPS, DLSw, DNP, Gnutella, MIME, and X11 Protocol Dissectors Let Remote Users Crash Ethereal or Execute Arbitrary Code
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1012976
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1012976
CVE Reference:   CVE-2005-0006, CVE-2005-0007, CVE-2005-0008, CVE-2005-0009, CVE-2005-0010, CVE-2005-0084   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Jan 25 2005
Impact:   Denial of service via network, Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): prior to 0.10.9
Description:   Several vulnerabilities were reported in Ethereal. A remote user may be able to execute arbitrary code or cause denial of service conditions.

The vendor reported flaws in the COPS, DLSw, DNP, Gnutella, MIME, and X11 protocol dissectors.

A remote user can cause the COPS dissector to enter an infinite loop [CVE: CVE-2005-0006].

A remote user can cause the DLSw dissector to cause an assertion, making Ethereal exit prematurely [CVE: CVE-2005-0007].

A remote user can trigger an error in the DNP dissector and cause memory corruption [CVE: CVE-2005-0008].

A remote user can cause the Gnutella dissector to cause an assertion, making Ethereal exit prematurely [CVE: CVE-2005-0009].

A remote user can cause the MMSE dissector to free static memory [CVE: CVE-2005-0010].

A remote user can trigger a string buffer overflow in the X11 protocol dissector [CVE: CVE-2005-0084].

Impact:   A remote user can send specially crafted data to cause arbitrary code to be executed on the target system with the privileges of the Ethereal process or to cause the target Ethereal process to crash.
Solution:   Mandrake has released a fix.

                 Mandrakelinux Security Update Advisory
 _______________________________________________________________________

 Package name: ethereal
 Advisory ID: MDKSA-2005:013
 Date: January 24th, 2005

 Affected versions: 10.0, 10.1
 ______________________________________________________________________

 Problem Description:

A number of vulnerabilities were found in Ethereal, all of which are
fixed in version 0.10.9: The COPS dissector could go into an infinite
loop (CAN-2005-0006); the DLSw dissector could cause an assertion,
making Ethereal exit prematurely (CAN-2005-0007); the DNP dissector
could cause memory corruption (CAN-2005-0008); the Gnutella dissector
could cause an assertion, making Ethereal exit prematurely
(CAN-2005-0009); the MMSE dissector could free static memory
(CAN-2005-0010); and the X11 protocol dissector is vulnerable to a
 string buffer overflow (CAN-2005-0084).
