(Mandrake Issues Fix) nfs-utils rquota Buffer Overflow on 64-bit Systems May Let Remote Users Execute Arbitrary Code
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1012857
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1012857
CVE Reference:   CVE-2004-0946   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Jan 12 2005
Impact:   Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): possibly affects 1.07-pre2 and prior versions
Description:   A buffer overflow vulnerability was reported in nfs-utils, affecting 64-bit systems. A remote user may be able to execute arbitrary code.

It is reported that on 64-bit systems, a remote user may be able to trigger a memcpy() buffer overflow in 'rquota_server.c'. Data from the dqblk structure that is 64 bits (on 64-bit systems) is copied into the rquota structure to a 32-bit variable.

Arjan van de Ven is credited with discovering this flaw.

Impact:   A remote user may be able to execute arbitrary code on the target system.
Solution:   Mandrake has released a fix.

                 Mandrakelinux Security Update Advisory
 _______________________________________________________________________

 Package name: nfs-utils
 Advisory ID: MDKSA-2005:005
 Date: January 11th, 2005

 Affected versions: 10.0, 10.1, 9.2, Corporate Server 2.1
 ______________________________________________________________________

 Problem Description:

Arjan van de Ven discovered a buffer overflow in rquotad on 64bit
architectures; an improper integer conversion could lead to a
buffer overflow. An attacker with access to an NFS share could send a
specially crafted request which could then lead to the execution of
 arbitrary code.

The updated packages are provided to prevent this issue.
