(Mandrake Issues Fix) Logcheck Unsafe Temporary Directory Lets Local Users Gain Elevated Privileges
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1012667
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1012667
CVE Reference:   CVE-2004-0404   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Dec 23 2004
Impact:   Modification of system information, Root access via local system
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 1.1.1
Description:   A vulnerability was reported in logcheck. A local user can obtain root privileges in certain cases.

Debian reported a vulnerability in logcheck. A local user can overwrite files with root level privileges.

The report indicates that logcheck creates a temporary directory in the '/var/tmp' directory in an unsafe manner. If the directory is removed, a local user can create a symbolic link (symlink) from a critical file on the system to temporary files. Then, when logcheck is run, the symlinked file will be overwritten with root privileges.

Christian Jaeger is credited with reported this flaw.

Impact:   A local user can overwrite arbitrary files on the target system if the logcheck temporary directory has been deleted.
Solution:   Mandrake has released a fix.
