(Gentoo Issues Fix) zgv Buffer Overflows Let Remote Users Execute Arbitrary Code
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1012107
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1012107
CVE Reference:   GENERIC-MAP-NOMATCH   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Nov 7 2004
Impact:   Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 5.5 was tested
Description:   Several heap overflow vulnerabilities were reported in the zgv image viewer software. A remote user can execute arbitrary code on the target system.

sean reported that a remote user can create a specially crafted image file that, when viewed, will trigger any of several overflows in the image parameter calculation process, leading to the execution of arbitrary code.

At least eleven separate overflows were reported, affecting the following files:

readbmp.c
readgif.c
readgif.c
readmrf.c
readpcx.c
readpng.c
readpnm.c
readprf.c
readtiff.c
readxpm.c
readxpm.c
readpcd.c

Impact:   A remote user can execute arbitrary code on the target system.
Solution:   Gentoo has released a fix and indicates that all zgv users should upgrade to the latest version:

# emerge --sync
# emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose ">=media-gfx/zgv-5.8"

Synopsis
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D

zgv contains multiple buffer overflows that can potentially lead to the
execution of arbitrary code.

Background
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D

zgv is a console image viewer based on svgalib.

Affected packages
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D

    -------------------------------------------------------------------
     Package / Vulnerable / Unaffected
    -------------------------------------------------------------------
  1  media-gfx/zgv        < 5.8                                 >=3D 5.8

Description
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D

Multiple arithmetic overflows have been detected in the image
processing code of zgv.

Impact
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D

An attacker could entice a user to open a specially-crafted image file,
potentially resulting in execution of arbitrary code with the rights of
the user running zgv.

Workaround
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D

There is no known workaround at this time.

Resolution
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D

All zgv users should upgrade to the latest version:

    # emerge --sync
    # emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose ">=3Dmedia-gfx/zgv-5.8"
