MySQL Buffer Overflow in mysql_real_connect() May Let Remote Users Execute Arbitrary Code
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1011008
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1011008
CVE Reference:   CVE-2004-0836   (Links to External Site)
Updated:  Oct 11 2004
Original Entry Date:  Aug 20 2004
Impact:   Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 4.0.20 and prior versions
Description:   A vulnerability was reported in MySQL in mysql_real_connect(). A remote user with control over DNS may be able to cause arbitrary code to be executed on the target system.

Lukasz Wojtow reported that the software does not validate the length of user-supplied input (supplied by a DNS server) to determine if the host address will fit within the 'sock_addr.sin_addr' buffer when a reverse DNS lookup is performed. A remote user with control over the DNS or the ability to spoof the DNS may be able to supply a specially crafted return value to trigger the buffer overflow and execute arbitrary code on the target system.

Impact:   A remote user may be able to execute arbitrary code on the target system.
Solution:   The vendor has issued a fix, available via the source tree. Information about accessing the source trees is available at:

http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/Installing_source_tree.html

The fix will be included in the next release.
