(Debian Issues Fix) Xonix Game High Score Mail Function Lets Local Users Gain Elevated Privileges
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1009791
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1009791
CVE Reference:   CVE-2004-0157   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Apr 15 2004
Impact:   Execution of arbitrary code via local system, User access via local system
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 1.4
Description:   A vulnerability was reported in the xonix game software. A local user can gain elevated privileges on the target system.

Debian reported that the software calls an external mail application with set group id (setgid) 'games' group privileges when a new high score is achieved. The flaw resides in 'x11.c'.

From code inspection, it appears that the code executes the 'rmail' binary but does not specify a path to the binary. As a result, a local user can create an alternate binary containing arbitrary commands and then achieve a new high score to cause the arbitrary commands to be executed with 'games' group privileges.

A local user can gain 'games' group privileges.

Steve Kemp is credited with discovery.

Impact:   A local user can execute arbitrary code with 'games' group privileges.
Solution:   Debian plans to released a fix for the current stable distribution (woody) in version 1.4-19woody1.

Package : xonix
Vulnerability : failure to drop privileges
Problem-Type : local
Debian-specific: no
CVE Ids : CAN-2004-0157

Steve Kemp discovered a vulnerability in xonix, a game, where an
external program was invoked while retaining setgid privileges. A
local attacker could exploit this vulnerability to gain gid "games".

For the current stable distribution (woody) this problem will be fixed
in version 1.4-19woody1.

For the unstable distribution (sid), this problem will be fixed soon.

We recommend that you update your xonix package.

Upgrade Instructions
- --------------------

wget url
will fetch the file for you
dpkg -i file.deb
        will install the referenced file.

If you are using the apt-get package manager, use the line for
sources.list as given below:

apt-get update
        will update the internal database
apt-get upgrade
        will install corrected packages

You may use an automated update by adding the resources from the
footer to the proper configuration.
