(Debian Issues Fix) Crawl Environment Variable Buffer Overflow May Let Local Users Gain Elevated Privileges
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1008934
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1008934
CVE Reference:   CVE-2004-0103   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Feb 3 2004
Impact:   Execution of arbitrary code via local system, User access via local system
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 4.0.0 (beta 26)
Description:   A buffer overflow vulnerability was reported in the Crawl game. A local user may be able to gain elevated privileges.

It is reported that a local user can set a specially crafted environment variable to trigger a buffer overflow. It may be possible to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the game.

According to the report, the flaw resides in 'food.cc' where a user-defined variable (SysEnv.crawl_pizza) is copied into a 200-byte fixed length buffer (info).

Debian reported that Steve Kemp discovered the flaw.

Impact:   A local user may be able to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the game application.
Solution:   Debian has released a fix for the stable distribution (woody) in version 4.0.0beta23-2woody1 and for the unstable distribution (sid) in version 4.0.0beta26-4.

Package : crawl
Vulnerability : buffer overflow
Problem-Type : local
Debian-specific: no
CVE ID : CAN-2004-0103

Steve Kemp from the GNU/Linux audit project discovered a problem in
crawl, another console based dungeon exploration game, in the vein of
nethack and rogue. The program uses several environment variables as
inputs but doesn't apply a size check before copying one of them into
a fixed size buffer.

For the stable distribution (woody) this problem has been fixed in
version 4.0.0beta23-2woody1.

For the unstable distribution (sid) this problem has been fixed in
version 4.0.0beta26-4.

We recommend that you upgrade your crawl package.

Upgrade Instructions
- --------------------

wget url
will fetch the file for you
dpkg -i file.deb
        will install the referenced file.

If you are using the apt-get package manager, use the line for
sources.list as given below:

apt-get update
        will update the internal database
apt-get upgrade
        will install corrected packages

You may use an automated update by adding the resources from the
footer to the proper configuration.
