(Debian Issues Fix) Freesweep Buffer Overflows Let Local Users Obtain 'games' Group Privileges
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1007830
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1007830
CVE Reference:   CVE-2003-0828   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Sep 29 2003
Impact:   Execution of arbitrary code via local system, User access via local system
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes

Description:   Some buffer overflow vulnerabilities were reported in the Freesweep game software. A local user may be able to obtain elevated privileges on the system.

It is reported that a local user can set certain environment variables to a specially crafted value and then invoke freesweep to execute arbitrary code. Because freesweep is configured with set group id (setgid) 'games' group privileges, a local user can obtain 'games' group privileges.

From code inspection, it appears that the HOME and USER environment variables are affected.

Steve Kemp is credited with discovery.

Impact:   A local user can execute arbitrary code with 'games' group privileges.
Solution:   Debian has released a fix for the current stable distribution (woody) in version 0.88-4woody1. A fix for the unstable distribution (sid) is to be available soon.

CVE Ids : CAN-2003-0828

Steve Kemp discovered a buffer overflow in freesweep, when processing
several environment variables. This vulnerability could be exploited
by a local user to gain gid 'games'.

For the current stable distribution (woody) this problem has been fixed
in version 0.88-4woody1.

For the unstable distribution (sid) this problem will be fixed soon.

We recommend that you update your freesweep package.
