(Mandrake Issues Fix) Xpdf May Execute Shell Commands Embedded Within PDF Files
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1007288
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1007288
CVE Reference:   CVE-2003-0434   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Jul 24 2003
Impact:   Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 1.01
Description:   A vulnerability was reported in Xpdf. A remote user can create a malicious but valid PDF file that will cause arbitrary scripts to be executed when the target user clicks on a link in the PDF file.

Hack4Life reported vulnerabilities in Xpdf and Acrobat Reader based on information submitted by Martyn Gilmore to CERT.

It is reported that a remote user can embed shell commands within external-type hyperlinks. According to the report, the hyperlink will be passed by the application to the operating system using the 'sh -c' exec command. As a result, a malicious link can reportedly be crafted in the following form:

mailto:[address]`[malicious command]`

Impact:   A remote user can create a PDF file so that when a target user clicks on a hypertext link within the document, arbitrary commands will be executed on the target user's system with the privileges of the target user.
Solution:   Mandrake has released a fix.

________________________________________________________________________

Package name: xpdf
Advisory ID: MDKSA-2003:071-1
Date: July 23rd, 2003
Original Advisory Date: June 27th, 2003
Affected versions:	9.0, 9.1, Corporate Server 2.1
________________________________________________________________________

Problem Description:

Martyn Gilmore discovered flaws in various PDF viewers, including xpdf.
An attacker could place malicious external hyperlinks in a document
that, if followed, could execute arbitary shell commands with the
privileges of the person viewing the PDF document.

Update:

New packages are available as the previous patches that had been
applied did not correct all possible ways of exploiting this issue.
