|
Original Entry Date: Feb 19 2003
|
Impact:
Denial of service via local system, Denial of service via network
|
Fix Available: Yes Vendor Confirmed: Yes
|
Version(s): Solaris 2.6, 7, 8, 9
|
Description:
A denial of service vulnerability was reported in Sun Solaris in rpcbind. A remote user can cause the system to consume all available memory.
A remote user can reportedly send specific UDP RPC packets to a target server to cause the target server to allocate large amounts of memory, eventually exhausting the swap space and disabling the system.
According to Sun, misbehaving RPC clients, hardware errors, or malicious local or remote users could generate the RPC packets required to cause this behavior.
|
Impact:
A remote user can cause the target server to consume all available memory and become disabled.
|
Solution:
Sun has issued the following fixes:
SPARC
Solaris 2.6: patch 105401-41
Solaris 7: patch 106942-24
Solaris 8: patch 108827-36
Solaris 9: patch 113319-04
Intel
Solaris 2.6: patch 105402-41
Solaris 7: patch 106943-24
Solaris 8: patch 108828-37
Solaris 2.5.1 users should upgrade to Solaris 2.6 (or later) and apply the appropriate patches.
According to Sun, Sun Alert document 50747 describes potential side effects of installing the above patches. However, upon analysis of the referenced Alert document, it is not clear what the vendor means.
